Why Choose Wood Over Plastic for Christmas Ornaments?

Why Choose Wood Over Plastic for Christmas Ornaments?

Walk into any big-box store in November and you'll find aisles of Christmas ornaments. Most of them are plastic, mass-produced, and designed to last a season or two before they crack, fade, or end up in a landfill.

There's nothing wrong with filling your tree on a budget. But if you're looking for ornaments that actually last, that feel good in your hands, and that mean something when you unbox them year after year, wood is a different experience entirely.

They age well. Plastic ornaments yellow, scratch, and get brittle over time. Wood does the opposite. It holds up year after year, and the natural grain gives each piece its own character. A wooden ornament from five years ago still looks like it did when you first hung it.

They feel like a real gift. Hand someone a plastic ornament and they'll say thank you. Hand them a wooden ornament with their name laser-cut into it and watch the reaction. There's a weight and warmth to wood that plastic just can't replicate. People notice the difference immediately.

They're better for the planet. Most plastic ornaments are made overseas from petroleum-based materials, shipped across the ocean in containers, and wrapped in more plastic. A wooden ornament made from Canadian wood and cut in a local workshop has a fraction of that footprint. And when it's eventually done (which could be decades from now), it's biodegradable.

They're not mass-produced. A plastic ornament from a department store is identical to the 10,000 others on the shelf. A laser-cut wooden ornament has its own grain pattern, its own subtle variations. Even two ornaments with the same design and name will look slightly different from each other. That's not a flaw. That's what makes them feel handmade.

They become part of the tradition. This is the big one. Plastic ornaments get replaced. Wooden ornaments get kept. They go in the box, they come out next December, and they earn their spot on the tree again. When there's a name on it, it becomes someone's ornament. Kids grow up with it. Families add to the collection every year.

What about the price?

Here's the thing most people don't expect: our wooden ornaments are actually cheaper than most personalizable plastic ornaments you'll find online. Our personalized ornaments start at $4.99, and that includes a name laser-cut right into real wood. Try finding a customizable plastic ornament for that price.

If you're comparing against the $1.50 generic ball from the clearance bin, sure, wood costs more. But those aren't really the same product. One is a decoration. The other is a keepsake.

Not everything needs to be wood

Let's be fair. Plastic ornaments have their place. If you need 50 identical red balls to fill out a tree, that's a job for plastic. If your toddler is in the "grab everything off the tree" phase, maybe keep the wooden ones on the higher branches for now.

But for the ornaments that matter, the ones with names, the ones you give as gifts, the ones that represent your family on the tree, wood is worth it.
